Real Stories. Real Skills.

Every course has a story behind it. From career changers taking their first steps into the events industry to experienced professionals building new skills, our learners come from a wide range of backgrounds.

At The Training Department, we believe the best learning comes from real-world experience. Our courses are designed and delivered by industry professionals, giving delegates the practical skills, confidence, and knowledge they need to succeed in live events.

But don’t just take our word for it. Hear directly from the people who’ve experienced our training, discover what they gained from their time with us, and see how they’re applying those skills in the real world.

My background was in the automotive industry, working in Operations at Polestar UK R&D. When the unfortunate closure of the R&D centre was announced, I decided to use it as an opportunity to pursue something I’d always been passionate about: live events. I loved attending live shows, but I had no idea where to start or how my existing skills could transfer into the industry. That changed when I discovered The Training Department’s End-to-End Event Production Management course.

For me, the biggest takeaway was realising just how much production management aligned with my previous operational experience. The combination of classroom learning and practical exercises, such as venue mark-outs and reading floor plans at ExCeL London, made the concepts easy to understand and apply. Equally valuable was the opportunity to network with people already working in the industry and gain an insight into how important relationships and communication are – which also led to mentoring opportunities.

Following that course, I also completed the Scenic Production and Video, Audio & Lighting courses. Together, they gave me a much broader understanding of supplier collaboration, technical delivery and the process of taking an event from concept through to execution.

Since that first course in March this year, I’ve secured my first role in the industry as a Junior Production Manager. I’ve already been able to apply what I learned, from planning and project tracking through to specifying AV equipment for a client event and coordinating with suppliers to deliver within budget. The event was delivered successfully and the client was very happy with the outcome.

The confidence and knowledge I gained through these courses meant I was able to hit the ground running far sooner than I otherwise would have. I’d happily recommend them to anyone looking to break into the events industry, whether you’re changing careers like I was or taking your first steps into the profession!

Before joining The Training Department, I was building my career as a freelance Producer and Production Coordinator, working across festivals and live events but I wanted to strengthen my technical knowledge and become a more well-rounded producer. My goal was to better understand the technical departments I work alongside every day and build the confidence to communicate more effectively with different teams as I progressed my career in live events.

I completed the Video, Audio & Lighting for Live Events, Scenic Production for Events and IOSH Accredited Exhibitions & Events Safety courses. Each one combined classroom-based learning with practical application, giving me a much deeper understanding of technical delivery and how different departments work together on live events. I particularly enjoyed learning from trainers who actively work in the industry and being able to ask questions in such a supportive environment.

Since completing the courses earlier this year, I’ve been able to apply what I’ve learned while working as a producer with The Production Department on Roundhay Festival and BST Hyde Park. The training has helped me work more confidently with suppliers, make better-informed production decisions and communicate more effectively across different departments. The IOSH course has also strengthened my understanding of delivering events safely and responsibly.

The Training Department has given me greater confidence and broadened my understanding of live event production. I’d recommend the courses to anyone looking to build a career in the industry, whether you’re just starting out or already working in events and want to strengthen your technical knowledge. The combination of expert trainers, practical learning and genuine industry relevance has had a real positive impact on my career!
